The Eye Of The Beholder

(Hehehe, see what I did with that title there? I’m probably more pleased than I should be)

Hello, lovely readers! I bought a new doll!

(crickets, because nobody is surprised)

And then I swapped her eyes and gave her mermaid hair!

(mild interest piqued)

This is Jackie (right) and her friend Carly (left). They like video games, Artemis Fowl (anyone who gets the joke on their shirts will make my day), and matching t-shirts. And each other, because they’re best friends.

That was what Jackie looked like last Friday.

This is what Jackie looks like now.

I’ve got mixed feelings, friends.

I’m super happy with the way her blue highlights turned out. They’re so pretty and subtle and I love them.

I’m also in love with the color of her eyes with her skin and face paint. They pop without being obnoxiously colored and fake.

So, gorgeous blue highlights+gorgeous custom eyes=gorgeous doll, right?

Eh. I’m not convinced. She’s pretty, she really is, but her entire expression changed when I swapped her eyes. Now she looks sort of wide-eyed and a little anxious. Not exactly in a bad way, but she no longer seems to fit the personality I had conjured up for her and she also no longer looks like a Jackie to me.

In addition, I’m not sure about the new eyes and highlights together. When she had her original eyes (Jackie is an older #49), it looked fine because both the hair and her eyes were shades of blue. But adding in the green/yellow/brown eyes, it doesn’t match so well. The eyes and the highlights distract from each other.

Now I could always switch them back, but there are two little problems with that as well. One, I’m pretty sure I permanently shortened my right thumb a tiny bit asserting my dominance over those pesky eyes while swapping them, and two, I have one of her old eyes in Eileen.

Yes, I said one of her old eyes.

Eileen is heterochromatic now! (thank you, @phoenixphaedrana, I never thought I’d use that word, but here I am)

I fully admit to this originally being an accident. I had two sets of eyes in container on my counter, and I guess I just wasn’t paying attention when I pushed the second eye in (the hazel/green one).

But after positioning the eye the way I liked it, I honestly didn’t hate how it looked enough to pop the eye out and put the other one in, and it keeps growing on me. Plus my thumbs still hurt, heh.

Isn’t she cute? I had never considered the idea of a heterochromatic doll, but now that I accidentally have one, I kind of like it.

So now that I’ve explained the entire debacle in the roundabout way that I did, I’d love your opinions!

I’d also love to hear what you think in the comments.

Interesting doll eye stories?

~quick postscript: a lot of people online have started calling me ‘Nat’ out of the blue. I’m not exactly sure why (anyone know? I’m pretty bewildered) but I’d just like to ask everyone to please not, because I really dislike that name. If you’d like to nickname me, you’re welcome to call me Reese, which is a nickname for Therese. Thanks!~

  1. Woah! I would never think to do a heterochromatic(am I spelling that right?) doll! That’s really cool. I would keep it, just to be different honestly. However…I don’t think I like Jackie’s eye/wig combo. I don’t know. They look super cute though!

    1. Lol, neither did I! (*checks spelling on Wikipedia* I think so? XD) I like it, too.
Yep, I’m not crazy about it either. I think the eyes would look fine without the highlights and the highlights would look fine without the eyes, but not both. Thank you!

  2. I love the idea of a heterochromatic doll! She is so cute. ❤ But I do feel like the eyes/hair distract and subtract from each other. I love their names though, and they will be so pretty whatever you end up choosing! 🙂

      1. Also, I think the reason people started calling you Nat, is because in Avengers Endgame they call Natasha/Black Widow, Nat. At least that’s the only place I’ve heard that nickname.

      2. That does make sense, actually…while I love all the Marvel super heroes I haven’t really watched very many of the recent movies (I watched Captain America and Thor when I was younger, and I loved the animated Avengers Assemble tv show when it was on Netflix but that’s about it). It does explain a lot, though!

  3. Yes, I’m not crazy! I thought you might have gotten a new doll, but I didn’t know for sure! I really like the eye and wig colour, but they don’t seem to work together. But they’re really pretty on their own, though! Also, I love your doll with the two different eye colours! What a great mistake!

  4. I LOVE Eileen’s eyes—-she looks so unique—– and Jackie’s highlights are adorable. I’m not a big fan of her eyes though. It’s almost like something doesn’t quite fit. I’m not sure what, though.
I really like the nickname Reese. I don’t think I have ever called you ‘Nat’ but if I have I’ll promise to stop.
I GET THE JOKE ON JACKIE AND CARLY’S SHIRTS.
Also, random but what are the name of your cats? I have a tuxedo cat named Oreo and I’m trying to convince my parents to let me get a kitten. If it was a she I’d name her Caprica (please tell me if you know the significance of that name).

    1. Thank you! I do, too. I love how unique they are 🙂
Lol, thanks! Only one or two people actually call me that in real life, but I always liked the nickname because hey, Reese’s Peanut Butter cups!
*GASP* YOU DO? My day hath been made, haha.
My cats are named Echo (black female shorthair) Fabian (tuxedo shorthair) Cleo (tortoiseshell shorthair) Loki (black Persian/Siamese mix) Apollo (gray/white tuxedo shorthair) and Humphrey (orange tabby exotic shorthair). Ooooh, that’s exciting! Kittens are the best! What kind do you want?

      1. That’s so cool! I only know two other people who read it, although the other day at the pool I made an AF reference to my friend and boy standing near us got it. Cleo is a great cat name, lol.
I’ll make sure to check it out!

  5. I actually weirdly like the eyes on both dolls. There’s something really beautiful and sort of mystical about Jackie’s full appearance, I don’t know if that was your intention, but I really like the unusualness of it.

I also like Eileen’s eyes, they are neat, and adds some diversity to your dolls which I like. 🙂

  6. Hhhh! Yes! Heterochromatic eyes! They’re my favorite things! (You know this XD). Also, yeah, I agree that the eyes and the hair don’t go super well together. I love the hair though! (I know how excited you were when you successfully swapped them lol.)
